Ocean Awareness

More Than an Activity — A Pathway

Ocean Awareness programmes are designed as pathways, not one-off experiences. Through regular, supported engagement with the ocean, participants build confidence, develop skills, and form lasting connections with the natural environment and each other. Whether someone is stepping into the water for the first time or progressing through a longer-term programme, each experience is part of a wider journey.

Our approach

How Our
Approach Works

We support participants through a gradual process of development:

  1. Access
Creating safe, welcoming entry points into the ocean.
  2. Support
    Providing guidance, structure, and encouragement.
  3. Confidence
    Building comfort, trust, and self-belief.
  4. Progression
    Developing skills, independence, and resilience.
  5. Connection
Strengthening relationships with self, others, and the ocean.

IN PRACTICE

Work with schools, youth organisations, and community groups has shown a consistent pattern:

  • One-off sessions create memorable experiences.
  • Repeated engagement creates meaningful change.

By extending programmes over weeks or months, participants move through a natural progression:

Reaction → Regulation → Confidence → Autonomy

This approach supports long-term development rather than short-term exposure.

A Flexible, Inclusive Model

Our approach adapts to the needs of different groups and participants.

This may include:

  • small group sessions
  • tailored programme design
  • adaptive equipment
  • flexible learning environments
  • ongoing mentoring and support

Each programme is designed to meet participants where they are — supporting them to progress at their own pace.

Who This Approach Supports

Our approach is used across a wide range of settings, including:

  • schools and youth organisations
  • community and inclusion programmes
  • wellbeing and recovery groups
  • outdoor learning and education initiatives
  • EU and international partnerships

Why It Matters

The ocean offers a powerful environment for learning, wellbeing, and personal development.

By combining structured support with natural experience, this approach helps reduce barriers to participation and creates opportunities for people who might not otherwise access the ocean.

  • Mentoring-led approach that supports participants at their own pace
