Mentoring Through the Ocean

Ocean Awareness

WHAT IT IS

Mentoring sits at the heart of Ocean Awareness. It’s not about instruction in the traditional sense. It’s about guiding, supporting, and creating the conditions for people to grow through experience. Whether on the beach, in the water, or between sessions, mentoring is present in everything we do.

Our approach

HOW IT WORKS

Our mentoring approach is built through:

  • Shared experiences in natural environments
  • Small group and one-to-one support
  • Non-formal, activity-based learning
  • Reflection and conversation

Learning happens naturally — through doing, observing, and connecting.

BUILDING CONFIDENCE

For many participants, the ocean represents uncertainty.

Through gradual exposure and support, participants learn to:

  • Manage fear
  • Build trust in themselves
  • Develop confidence in dynamic environments

Progress is measured in comfort, not performance.

PATHWAYS & PROGRESSION

Mentoring supports long-term development.

Participants move from:

  • First experiences
  • → to confidence
  • → to independence
  • → to supporting others

Many return as peer mentors, continuing the cycle.

DIGNITY OF RISK

We support participants in taking appropriate risks.

This builds:

  • Resilience
  • Independence
  • Decision-making

All within a safe and supported environment.

IMPACT

Mentoring supports:

  • Confidence and self-esteem
  • Social development
  • Emotional wellbeing
  • Long-term engagement with the ocean
