Our Philosophy
Why the ocean matters
Understanding the connection between ocean environments, wellbeing and learning.
OUR PHILOSOPHY
Everyone Deserves Ocean Time
The Ocean as a Place of Learning and Wellbeing
Ocean Awareness is grounded in a simple belief — that time in, on and around the ocean can support physical health, mental wellbeing and human connection. The ocean offers a unique environment. It can be both challenging and calming, creating space for people to learn, adapt and grow. Our programmes are designed to support this experience — helping participants build confidence, develop awareness and form a lasting connection with the natural world.
THE OCEAN & WELLBEING
The Ocean and Human Wellbeing
There is a growing understanding of the relationship between ocean environments and human wellbeing.
Often referred to as Blue Mind, this connection highlights how time near water can support reduced stress, improved mood and a greater sense of calm and focus.
While the exact mechanisms are still being explored, what is clear is that ocean environments offer powerful opportunities for both physical and mental development.

Our Philosophy
LEARNING THROUGH EXPERIENCE
Our approach is based on non-formal, experiential learning.
Participants learn by doing — through movement, interaction and shared experience in the ocean.
While practical skills such as water safety and ocean awareness are developed, the deeper learning often happens through:
- Overcoming challenges
- Building confidence
- Connecting with others
- Developing independence
The emphasis is not on performance, but on participation and progression.

KEY PHILOSOPHIES
THE POWER OF THE GROUP
Connection and Shared Experience
Learning in a group environment plays an important role. Shared experiences in the ocean help participants develop a sense of belonging, identity and connection.
Participants support each other, learn together and build relationships that extend beyond the session. This social element is a key part of the Ocean Awareness approach.
THE ROLE OF THE ENVIRONMENT
A Dynamic Natural Environment
The ocean is constantly changing. Conditions shift, waves vary and no two sessions are the same.
This creates a natural learning environment where participants develop:
- Awareness
- Adaptability
- Resilience
- Confidence in uncertainty
We often say:
“The ocean decides.”
Our role is to guide participants safely within that environment.
SUPPORTING A BROADER CONNECTION
A Wider Relationship with the Ocean
Ocean Awareness aligns with a growing global focus on strengthening society’s relationship with the ocean.
This includes understanding how ocean health and human wellbeing are connected, and how education and experience can support both.
By helping people build positive relationships with the ocean, we also support greater awareness, care and responsibility for the natural environment.
BRIDGE TO PRACTICE
From Philosophy to Practice
These ideas are not separate from what we do — they shape every programme we deliver.
Through structured, supportive experiences, participants are given the opportunity to engage with the ocean in a way that builds confidence, connection and long-term engagement.
